Ralph McLean’s Sunday afternoon brunches have become one of the most popular items on the festival programme, and this year the award-winning broadcaster brings his attention to bear on none other than Belfast's own, Gary Moore. With special guests Albert Mills and Ian 'Speedo' Wilson.
From the Stormont estate in Belfast to the world’s greatest stages, Gary Moore retained a dedication to his playing that marked him out as a hero among guitar heroes. As part of the ever-popular Sunday Brunch, Ralph McLean is joined by a couple of special guests as he pays tribute to one of our finest musicians.
Born and raised in Belfast, Gary Moore developed a technique that went on to earn him invitations to play with some of the greatest names in rock history – Skid Row, Thin Lizzy and stints in Colosseum and in Greg Lake’s band – before embarking on an acclaimed solo career. But it was his return to his roots in 1990 with the multi-million selling album Still Got the Blues that marked him out from the crowd as he changed direction and returned to the music that had been his inspiration. The records that he made between then and his untimely death in 2011 at the age of 58 remain the most powerful of his career.
Ralph is joined on stage by bassist extraordinaire Albert Mills, who knew Gary personally and can speak about the life and career of his friend, and Ian ‘Speedo’ Wilson, who has paid tribute to Moore on many occasions with his own blistering take on that amazing playing style. Ian can demonstrate some of the techniques that marked Gary out as the guitarist’s guitarist. All this and a complimentary coffee and snack? It looks like a brunch not to be missed.
